The Mathom-House

10th century Old English word (māþm) that evolved into a double meaning - thanks Tolkien! It covers treasures plus non useful things that we can't throw away.

For the old Beowulf the word was just about treasures. The gold guarded by the dragon.

eald enta geweorc… māþma hord

("the ancient work of giants… a hoard of treasures")

We still have Mathom-Houses according to the modern double meaning. Museums come to mind. But the key always hides in the definition of useful for what.

Anyway, I like museums.
