old chess pieces that whisper of forgotten battles +  human emotions 

weathered faces showing worry & sadness, pride & defiance / sometimes resignation / the unknown carver of the walrus tusks did a good job capturing ancient vibes from Viking and Gaelic lore

elegance is foreign to the Lewis Chessmen / the pieces don't play in the same league as the Staunton chess sets / they feel primeval 

furrowed brows / clenched fists / speak volumes about human nature / centuries of warfare + political intrigues / good portrait of the human disaster
