Bamum Script & Pictograms

Created by King Ibrahim Njoya from one of the kingdoms of western Cameroon, the system evolved from pictograms to semi-syllabary between 1896 and 1910. Not in use anymore, but the design is interesting - especially the over 400 pictograms created.

I like the question mark:

The arrow to the point suggests: "What's this?"

Our question mark likely comes from the Latin word quaestio - "question" that evolved into a sign for brevity during the Middle Ages. There are various stories of the origin.

Back to the Bamum scripts, very interesting icons - check this PDF with the Unicode characters.
