Digital Dust: A Modern Viral Post Versus A Stone Tablet

I was asking myself how quick a viral post disappears nowadays with such an explosion in content generation.

Found that this varies across platforms and it's measured as a "half-life" average - the time in which a viral post receives half the total of engagements before dissolving into digital dust.

The data shows that in 2026, X is the worst at barely 52 minutes, followed by Facebook. YouTube and Pinterest are at the other extreme. They are the winners, but not for long (~10 days and ~4 months).

Interesting portrait of the ephemeral life of viral content. Compare this to ancient stone tablets.

Who wins?

...no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away.

(How did the Roman Emperor know so much about social media?)
