If Custer Was an American Indian
General - or Lieutenant Colonel, depending on time - George Armstrong Custer fought the tribes
of what once was known as the "Great American Desert" and also died at
their hands.
But what would he choose if born and America Indian between living free or in a reservation?
If I were an Indian, I often think that I would greatly prefer to cast my lot among those of my people who adhered to the free open plains, rather than submit to the confined limits of a reservation.
(From his book My Life on the Plains, 1874.)
